Art History Major

The Art History Major requires 30 credits numbered above 299; courses taken within the department must all be art history courses. Students in this more specialized major may include six credits of art studio work in the required 30 credits. Also, students may petition to take up to nine credits of appropriate courses in art history outside the department (i.e., non-HOA courses).

•  Distribution Requirement: Course offerings in art history are divided into five broad categories: ancient/medieval, Northern/Italian Renaissance,  Baroque/18th-century European, modern/American, and non-Western. Art history majors are required to take at least one course in each of these five categories.

•  500-Level Course Requirement: 500-level courses are customarily open to advanced undergraduate majors and to graduate students in the M.A. program in art history. Such courses offer more detailed study of particular fields within art history than those at the 300-400 levels. Art history majors are required to take at least one course at the 500 level.

•  Research and Professional Practice Seminar Requirement: During their junior or senior year, art history majors are required to take a senior seminar for three credits. This course explores the practical aspects of the discipline, paying particular attention to potential career paths and critical writing.

Music History & Cultures Major

The Major in Music History & Cultures is designed for students who wish to study music in its historical, social, and cultural contexts and in relation to other arts. Although majors will be encouraged to develop performance skills, the focus of the degree will be on the study of musical cultures and styles in a liberal arts environment. Students explore the music of many different periods and cultural traditions. At the lower division level, students acquire basic musical skills (0-6 credits); as well as a foundation in music history (9 credits chosen from HOM 165, 166, 195, 266, 267, 268 or 285). Students at the upper division level take an additional 21-24 credits of HOM courses numbered 300 or above. One course must be from each of the following fields: European art music, American music, and World music. As part of required courses, students also take "Musicology in Action," a junior seminar designed to stimulate critical thought about music and to hone research and writing skills. In addition to the course requirements listed above, students in the B.A. in Music History and Cultures program are required to complete at least two semesters of individual studio lessons. Majors who have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 and a cumulative departmental GPA of at least 3.7 will be invited to earn a degree with distinction.
