The B.A. degree in Art History prepares students to write, speak, and analyze art and visual culture, preparing them for a wide range of careers in such sectors as museums, galleries and the art market, education, cultural heritage and cultural management. Students take introductory surveys about the art of Europe, North America, Latin America, South and East Asia, as well as in-depth courses about key themes in the history of art and visual culture in these and other world regions. Students are encouraged to undertake internships or volunteer at the Special Collections Research Center and the SUArt Galleries on campus.

The Art History Major requires 30 credits of upper-division coursework drawn from a variety of historical and geographic areas ranging from Ancient and Italian Renaissance to Modern and Non-Western art. HOA 105 and 106 are prerequisites for many upper-level courses, but do not count toward the major. For more on this major’s specific requirements please see the Syracuse University course catalog.

The major in Music History and Cultures is designed for students who wish to study music in its historical, social and cultural contexts and in relation to other arts. Although majors are encouraged to develop performance skills, the focus of the degree is on the study of musical cultures and styles in a liberal arts environment. The major and minor in History of Architecture explore the history of styles and monuments, but they also do much more. They provide you with a rich and nuanced understanding of how humanity has interacted with the environment by constructing buildings and cities and by manipulating the landscape, under different social, political, technological and economic circumstances. This degree will prepare you for a variety of career paths, including historic preservation, cultural resource management, museum work, academia, architectural design, and consulting with firms specializing in historic buildings.

IMPORTANT: Not all courses in the History of Architecture offered in the Major and Minor in History of Architecture will be accepted as Architecture History or Architecture History Elective credits for the BA in Architecture. The Fine Arts major requires 30 credits of coursework and allows students to draw from both art history and music history courses, as well as studio art and music lessons or ensembles, in crafting the specific concentration of their major.
